Hello! I’m a seasoned storyteller, communications strategist and idea generator for USA Fencing, the national governing body for the sport of fencing in the United States.

As USA Fencing’s Director of Communications, I lead a team of two devoted to helping tell engage current members, introduce the sport to more families and tell fencing’s story to the world. I write press releases, CEO speeches, op-eds, emails, news articles, web copy, social media updates, video scripts, podcasts and more — adapting the text to fit the audience while maintaining a consistent voice.

Our efforts seem to be working. During the Olympic Games Paris 2024, the sport ranked sixth in social prevalence — trailing only Soccer, Basketball, Gymnastics, Swimming and Track & Field. (That's up from 12th in Tokyo.) We accomplished this through relentless media outreach, a New York City media event attended by more than 60 journalists, targeted opportunities for our CEO and a grassroots effort to spotlight everyday athletes.

In non-Games times, I work closely with my colleagues at USA Fencing, whom I've asked to see my communications team as "spotlight operators," ready to cast our glow on their hard work by finding the right outlets for their message across social media, web, graphics and email.

If it's a complicated topic? Even better! I get a thrill out of taking a complex new program and explaining it to members in a way that makes them nod — not scratch — their head. It's the same approach I used in my three years at Bucknell University when meeting with students or professors to learn about their latest breakthrough.

Before USA Fencing and Bucknell, I founded the Bryan on Scouting blog (now called Aaron on Scouting), helping grow it into the top source for BSA news with more than 350,000 monthly page views.
